There is no denying the popularity of electronic cigarettes. A 2017 survey by ASH put the number of electronic cigarette users in the UK at 700 thousand, and that number is growing rapidly. Given some recent statements in regards to the benefits of switching to electronic cigarettes this popularity is perhaps not surprising. Take for example recent statement by John Britton, professor of the Royal College of Physicians, who stated if all of the smokers in Britain were to stop smoking traditional cigarettes, and switched to electronic cigarettes, it would save as many as 5 million lives.

What is e-Liquid?
E-Liquid is the fluid that provides the flavour and nicotine for your electronic cigarettes. When heated this e-Liquid is converted into a vapour which can be inhaled. This e-Liquid is able to mimic the effects and sensation of smoke from traditional cigarettes, without the same toxic chemicals.
What is e-Liquid made from?
E-liquid is composed of three main ingredients. These are the liquid base, flavouring and nicotine. Here we will look at each of these three ingredients in more detail:
The flavouring and nicotine are both dissolved in a hygroscopic solution. This enables the water in the solution to be converted in a vapour when heat is applied. The most common hygroscopic solutions include vegetable glycerine (VG), propylene glycol (PG) and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400).
Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG) are both non-toxic, organic compounds. You will find both of these substances in a wide range of food additives and pharmaceutical products. Of the two, Propylene Glycol is the more common base. This is thanks to it’s slightly thinner consistency which makes it easier to become absorbed by the fabric inside of the cartomiser.
The fact that Propylene Glycol us thinner also means that it doesn’t clog up the heating element as quickly, compared to Vegetable Glycerin. Propylene Glycol is completely tasteless and odourless, which makes it perfect for flavouring e-Juice. However, Propylene Glycol is not without it’s downsides. It is also known to dry out the throat when used regularly and may cause allergic reactions in a small number of cases.
Vegetable Glycerin is a comparatively thicker solution. It also has a slightly sweeter taste, which can overshadow some e-Juice flavouring. Compared to Propylene Glycol, you get less of a throat hit when using a Vegetable Glycerin solution. The benefits of Vegetable Glycerin include producing more vapour than Propylene Glycol solutions and not having the same issues with allergic reactions.
One of the most attractive features of electronic cigarettes are the hundreds of different flavours which are available. Flavouring in the e-Juice allows electronic cigarettes to mimic the taste of traditional favourites such as tobacco and menthol. It also enable electronic cigarette manufacturers to create more exotic tastes such as fruit, coffee or chocolate. These different tastes are created using the same basic ingredients as those found in food flavouring.
Finally, e-Liquid also contains nicotine. One of the advantages of e-Liquid is that the amount of nicotine contained can be adjusted to meet the users needs and preferences. A low nicotine e-Liquid will typically have a nicotine concentration of between 6 and 8 milligrams per millilitre of liquid. A medium e-Liquid usually has about 10 – 14 milligram of nicotine per millilitre of liquid.
